Back in 2015, when Michael Kremláček, a university student of regional development with no previous education in graphic design or printmaking, and his friend Michal Ondráček, a student of industrial design, founded a small DIY printing studio in an old house in Brno, CZ. They both shared the dream of making posters and promoting printmaking as a valuable part of art in Czech Republic. Kremla quickly became addicted to the screen printing process and dedicated the following years to polishing the craft, learning from older printers and mainly by his own mistakes. He then founded HW Prints studio, focusing mainly on printing on textiles for small local businesses and fashion brands. HW Prints developed over the years into young local creatives’ favourite destination, keeping HW busy with amazing projects. As the customers grew, Kremla kept pace with them, hiring another printer and moving to bigger space.
Inspired by visits to Print Club London, Mesh Print Club, Rotterdam, and Le Raclet in Berlin, Kremla never stopped thinking about posters. In spring 2020, during the first Covid-19 wave, with some free time on his hands, he finally decided to pull the trigger and open a little shop in the city centre, offering prints designed by fellow artists, exclusively hand-pulled in HW Prints. Síto was born with core artists including; Ivan Svárovský, Lukáš Krol, Alina Random, Hypochondra, Jiří Mayer and Michal Ondráček.
Kremla’s ultimate goal is to produce quality prints on a regular basis; collaborating with local artists, illustrators, graphic designers and photographers. “It is so fun to see artist get excited by screen printing process and watch them coming up with new ideas, which often pushes the limits of printing itself” says the founder.
In the studio all posters are printed with water-based inks on a Czech-made bed, allowing to print easily up to B1 format. Although it is still a small printshop, it has everything you need.
