A University of the Arts alumni, Sophie McKenzie Baker studied at London College of Fashion and graduated from London College of Communication in 2012 with a BA in Book Arts & Design. Today, she works as a freelance UX/UI Designer in tandem with creating her own art. Under the name Garwood Studios, Sophie experiments with alternative photography and traditional printing processes. Her works mix analogue and digital photography, resulting in dreamy hand-printed cyanotypes. For the past 9 years, she has been working for various commercial fashion and eCommerce brands including Allsaints, Christie’s London, Hackett London, Crabtree & Evelyn, Façonnable, Sweaty Betty & Random House.
Each of Sophie’s works begins with a film negative, digital photograph, or a digitally created illustration. She then hand coats recycled paper using various brush strokes and techniques, before exposing and developing each print individually, often naturally in the sun!
“I am inspired by nature, space, dreams, travel, water, and vintage family photographs lovingly passed down throughout the generations. I am also intrigued by conspiracy theories, am a true yogi, and have left a piece of my heart in South East Asia, a place which is very special to me.”
For Sophie, an MA may be on the cards next year, along with lots of travelling (once the pandemic has settled), and further experimentation with lumen prints and new alternative works.
