The Elixir to Induce Euphoria | Solo Exhibition by Wen Ching Yiu

posted by POP Members December 2, 2024

Wen Ching Yiu (Krystine) is a Hong Kong-based visual artist and graphic designer focusing on graphic design, printmaking, and illustration. Graphic design, screen printing and Risograph are her main creative outlets, while memories act as her fundamental inspiration. Krystine’s work breaks traditional aesthetic concepts, emphasising the beauty of imperfections. This is exemplified in her current exhibition, The Elixir to Induce Euphoria, which is taking place at The Glasshouse Culture Area at Lemna of the Alchemist, Hong Kong until 12th January 2025.

The Elixir to Induce Euphoria draws inspiration from a poison in Harry Potter, which brings sudden amusement and a sense of euphoria to the drinker. Inspired by her observations of self and living environments, Krystine brings her playful attitude to visualisations of experiences and reality. Just like drinking the elixir and entering an imaginary world, she reconstructs blissfulness and transforms it into motivation.

Utilising mono screen printing and painting, Krystine expresses her whimsical imagination and explores the emotional landscapes within social norms. While we may not be able to change the world, we still have the ability to imagine and play. Her whimsical imagination is represented in The Tranquillity Moment, where Kyrstine introduces the concept of letting go of unhappy experiences, and being open to the bright future. The artist comments; “Although we all have past, we still have the chance to break through ourselves and be a better us. Just like the number 0, a circle visually, which means the end, but also the beginning.”

In another featured featured monoprint, As Beautiful As Flowers, Krystine motivates and encourages self-worth through her use of playfulness. The piece takes inspiration from the Chinese text 「貌美如花」; a metaphor which means (a person) is as dazzling as flowers. She comments on the piece; “When we are looking at ourselves, we may not think that we are that charming; but in the perspective of people who love you, you are always beautiful from all sides.”  In Off Work on time, Krystine further demonstrates her playful approach to her work. She summarises the atmosphere of the piece as follows; “Let’s groove tonight! Burn all computers and papers, leaving the production line. Bye-bye to hell, and have a happy Friday!”
