Hagai Farago | HED Magazine

posted by POP Members November 7, 2024

Led by Hagai Farago, a Tel-Aviv-based printmaker, HED is a silkscreen, hand-printed Artist-Magazine that brings together a mosaic of comments and impressions on the raging war, facilitating a complex discourse over its 24 pages.

Hagai asks; “What kind of printmaking can rise in such devastating times? As a screen-printing enthusiast I was eager to find a way to re-address my printing practices in search of personal purpose.” After months of concussion and stress, Hagai chose to pursue a group project as a way to act in response to the war. He invited a multidisciplinary and diverse group of artists to join forces in the publishing of an Artist-Magazine, all printed manually in silkscreen printing as part of a collaborative effort.

The magazine was named HED – Wartime Magazine; “hed” meaning echo in Hebrew. The first edition, released in Summer 2024, consists of very personal responses across a variety of styles and formats. Drawings, poems, photography, and collage all came together into the print workshop, harnessing the potential of the screens to accept a wide range of visual expressions. In order to maintain a uniform nature to all the works appearing in the Magazine, Hagai and his team chose a consistent tone of blue for the printing of the whole magazine, cover to cover.

Hagai comments; “In fact, we were troubled with self-doubts: Why should another publication be made about the war? We live in times of hyper-inflation of information, imagery and reports. The news train never stops.” With these questions in mind, HED took the shape of a communal act, thus the magazine is a place for intimate, personal dialogue. Hagai continues; “HED gives room for personal acts of reach-out between the artists and the readers, and in between the artists themselves. The mosaic of work featured in the magazine dwells on families near and far; on dreams and horror. The war appeared to us at the print workshop like a dark prism with a thousand different faces.”
