This month we’re stoked to check out a few printed publications from some of the incredible members of our People of Print Membership community. From Risograph printed zines, to handmade artist’s books, take a look at these awesome publications below.
Wen Ching Yiu / Krystine: AVA Magazine #12 AVA Magazine is a yearly magazine published by the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University for collating the happenings of students and alumni each year and promoting the Academy. Issue #12 was designed by Wen Ching Yiu (Krystine), and works around the theme of “playfulness and authenticity” of an art and design school. Diverse, bright, and vivid colours were chosen to represent the captivating and fulfilling times for the school this year, as well as hand-written graphics on the cover to show the crafty side of design. The magazine has 3 sections: AVA Culture, AVA Connections, and AVA Info, in which 4 types of papers were chosen to play with the magazine design.
Lucy Chapman: Dreamachine This little Risograph zine by Lucy Chapman is all about The Dreamachine, an iconic kinetic artwork and stroboscope originally designed by Beat Generation artist Bryon Gysin and mathematician Ian Sommerville in the late 1950s. The Dreamachine uses stroboscopic light to evoke psychedelic kaleidoscopic visions in the mind of the viewer, through a phenomenon known as Flicker. Lucy studied and made a version the Dreamachine as part of her MA in Art & Science at Central Saint Martin’s, and this Zine accompanied the project. The 8 page, A6 zine has some background information about the Dreamachine, plus stencils to make your own; there’s a QR code linked to instructions, and a foldout poster inside.
Celia Ciona: Œils, the miniature book Œils silently tells its story of loneliness among others, one page after another, following a slow rhythm. This artist’s book project was intended to be a miniature; a small object that one cherishes, keeps and looks at carefully, that one exhibits as a curiosity and carries along, like a talisman, a little illustrated reminder which draws its strength from simple images. Made by the magical fingers of Elodie Chanrion, a talented bookbinder, the book has received a Coptic binding and is made up of 100% cotton paper scraps. The relief prints inside were handprinted (baren). Œils was also created for a group exhibition on the theme of artist’s books, which was held in 2019 at the In8 engraving workshop in Lyon.
Drum Machine Editions: Blues for Winter Zero Blues for Winter Zero is an experimental publication by musicians Wes Tirey (Asheville, NC) and M. Sweets (Brooklyn, NY). Published by Drum Machine Editions in May 2023, this cassette and poetry broadside play out like a dusty, surrealist radio drama set on a forgotten stretch of highway in the Twilight Zone. The design, screen printing, and assembly was conducted by Erik Pedersen at Drum Machine Editions. Additional Risograph printing on cassette inserts was by Mica Mead and Colin Sutherland at Woolly Press. Blues for Winter Zero was awarded Best Artist’s Book at North Carolina Museum of Art’s End Paper Art Book Fair in September 2023 and now resides in the museum’s permanent collection.
