Underway Studio

Underway Studio is an illustration and printmaking collective, now based in Brixton, South London. Founded in 2015, the studio took its name from the Westway flyover under which it found its first home. The four members of Underway Studio work collaboratively on design projects using silkscreen print as a primary medium. Print designs are passed between the collective until they are finalised and ready to be screen printed. As a result, the artworks have an impression from each artist, creating a unique aesthetic and way of working.

The studio is made up of members Aiden Barefoot, Anna Schmidt-Hansen, Caitlin Parks, and Melissa North. Graduating from the Illustration and Visual Communication course at the University of Westminster across different years, they were brought together by their love of print. After graduating, the foursome organised a studio space to continue to work together as individuals. It was only after collaborating on a series of successful projects, that Underway Studio became the full time collaboration and creative studio that it is today.

Printed Spaces opened in 2018 and was a new beginning for Underway Studio. A collaboration between the four current members, it was an exploration into the architecture of London’s cultural spaces, with the portfolio including the original sold-out Barbican screen print, as well as the popular Brixton Rec and Tate Modern prints.

Much of Underway Studio’s work is influenced by architecture, form, texture, and colour. Using physical print processes means their visual language is both playful and distinctive, incorporating photography, collage, drawing, and embracing any happy accidents along the way.

Since the 2018 Printed Spaces launch the studio has continued to hold solo exhibitions, regularly participate in various illustration and print fairs across the country, as well as pursue illustration project based work. Some notable projects include designing a t-shirt for Tate Modern shops and designing prints for both the Barbican and Design Museum shop. The studio was also invited to customise a pair of Adidas Superstar’s to be exhibited as part of the brand’s 50th Anniversary celebrations.

Recently, the studio launched a new selection of screen prints as part of Blue Print: A Journey Along the Victoria Line; a fully screen printed portfolio celebrating architecture across London. Starting from their studio in Brixton and travelling North to Walthamstow, the home of Buhler + Co., the exhibition highlights iconic locations from around the Victoria Line.
