Dave Lefner: the Masters Relief at Bankside Gallery

posted by POP Members November 4, 2019

Dave Lefner is a Los Angeles-based artist who works almost exclusively in the medium of reduction linocut. His colourful and retro art reflects the sunny optimism of mid 20th Century Americana. He has recently exhibited at the Pasadena Museum of California Art (PMCA) and the Le Musée de l’imprimerie de Nantes, France. His work is also in the Permanent Collection of Prints and Drawings at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).

We are excited to announce Official People of Print member Dave Lefner’s first exhibition in the United Kingdom taking place in November 2019. He maintains a deep respect for the British tradition of printmaking and feels honoured to be part of the group show. Lefner has several collectors in the UK, but this will be the first time his work will be shown in a gallery. Two of his prints have been selected by the Royal Society of Painters – Printmakers for the prestigious The Masters Relief exhibition at the Bankside Gallery in London.

The first of the two reduction linocuts selected is “El Rey”; an image of a 1936 historic theatre marquee. In a Los Angeles Times’ review of Lefner’s PMCA exhibition, art journalist R. Daniel Foster referred to the piece in baking terms as “an Art Deco confection: a tightly cropped tumble of neon tubing that curls around fat letters, backed by a chroma-rich sky”.

The second print; “Starlite, Starbrite” was featured earlier this year in the Nantes show “Typolino: La typographie en linogravure”.  This image is a cheerful, “stellar” burst of vintage neon, complete with cursive cast shadows.

You can catch the exhibition from the 13th to the 24th November 2019, with an opening on the 12th.
