Florian Tripoteau: La conquête de l’espace

posted by POP Members July 13, 2020

La conquête de l’espace (Space Conquest) is an ongoing project by designer and artist Florian Tripoteau. Through the use of space-related iconography, Florian expresses scepticism about the way in which the private occupies public space. His approach aims to produce various forms, essentially visual, in order to emphasise this conquest which operates in our daily environment, on Earth and beyond.

As part of the project Florian partook in the exhibition 1 METRE, for which he created a sculpture made of wood, steel and micro-porous paint on plywood. The exhibition forms part of Arles Contemporain, and was the first exhibition hosted by Le Palais. In light of the effects of Covid19, the international exhibitions of photography of Arles (Rencontres d’Arles) were forced to postpone their schedules. They transformed this constraint into a boost of creativity by inviting twelve artists who were partaking in a residency in Arles, to take over the 16th century building, Le Palais.

The collective exhibition offers installations born from hybrid and collaborative practices. Each artist rethought the notion of distance in terms of intimate, social and political space through the creation of spaces for projection, protection, communication or reflection. Divided over three floors, the exhibition invites the public to a labyrinthine journey, with themes such as the new rituals of communication with the dead, and the conquest of public and private space. The economic, political and creative context of the exhibition allowed the artists to interpret on different scales the notions of distance, and the means of activation between an artwork and a visitor.

To coincide with the exhibition and his collaboration with Maxime Muller, entitled Demain, la Lune, Florian also designed a t-shirt as a way to bring the exhibition from the white cube to the public space. The tee was created with the intention to “live its own life during and after the exhibition“, and to be worn by members of the exhibition crew.

“I see the t-shirt as a way to open a (public) space. A space for people to reconnect with some ancient and forgotten elements of our histories and cultures. With an interest for the stars and the aerospace industry, my practice is led by a will to reactivate texts and images from the past, in order to question the contemporary and our future, through the things we wear.”

You can pre-order the t-shirt on Everpress here.

The exhibition is taking place until the 31st of August 2020 at Le Palais, Arles, France.
