The issue of waste management has become a global concern, and the world’s waste production is increasing at an alarming rate. To address this issue, the SUPERTRASH project aims to create awareness about the importance of recycling waste and making trash valuable. By increasing awareness and educating the public about the benefits of recycling and upcycling, SUPERTRASH hopes to change the perspective of waste from a problem to an opportunity.
Created by design studio Midnight Project, and sponsored by Mohawk Paper, Lucky Risograph, Fabscrap, and Randolph Beer, SUPERTRASH is centred on the concept of Trash-to-Treasure. As part of their Trash-to-Treasure campaign, Midnight Project will be creating unique and memorable personalities for each piece of trash they find. Using the 16 personalities framework as a basis for their characters, each piece of trash will have a distinct name and personality traits that correspond with its location and origin.
For example, a piece of plastic waste found on the beach might be given the name “Sandy” and have the personality traits of being outgoing, adventurous, and resilient. Meanwhile, a piece of paper waste found in an office building might be named “Paperclip” and have the personality traits of being organised, detail-oriented, and efficient.
“By creating these characters, we hope to make people see trash in a new light and encourage them to think about the potential value and usefulness of items that are often considered waste. We believe that by giving each piece of trash a unique personality, we can create a more personal connection with our audience and inspire them to take action towards more sustainable waste management practices.”
