Wen Ching Yiu | Oumuamua in the Corridor

posted by POP Members May 26, 2023

Wen Ching Yiu (Krystine) is currently exhibiting a series of 5 screen prints and a small mezzotint print as part of the exhibition Oumuamua in the Corridor in Hong Kong through to 4th June 2023.

In Oumaumua in the Corridor, questions are raised about the unknown beyond our existence, identity, and world after exiting to a new social framework. Will we remain the same? Will life be something more? Or will we remain as specks of dust, floating in space time? In our ever-changing world full of new beginnings and possibilities, 6 artists rediscover different perspectives in exploring themselves. As they dig deep into their own minds experimenting with various mediums including but not limited to painting, performance, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, and installation. Their heightened awareness of our existing world prompts valiant attempts at self-introspection, propelling them to be bold and take control.

The series of prints made by Krystine is inspired by her late grandma. Krystine remembers her grandma always repetitively speaking “Ah Meh” (translated as “mom” in Shanghainese), thus named the the figure in her prints “Ah Meh” to symbolise her grandma. This also represents the meaning of another mum in her life. Using surreal and whimsical colours, and sheep as a metaphor for her grandma, Krystine brings her into the Neverland in which she could live happily ever after with her long-lasting pet, QQ.

Ah Meh in the Wonderland, an edition of 3 mezzotints, is the first time that Krystine has worked with this technique. The portrait print is a starting point in which to introduce Ah Meh to audiences. Standing in front of the arch, the work conveys that she has entered into another world, which leads on to her series of screen prints.

The collection of screen prints reimagines the moments Ah Meh, QQ, and Krystine spent together. The moments that the prints capture are fictional, created to extend her grandma’s afterlife. Krystine also meditated during the process of printing the multiple layers. By combining monoprint and layers of screen printing, the huge amounts of layers (14-17 layers for each print) not only created visual candies, but also pushed her to explore this medium and create fruitful images.

Oumuamua in the Corridor is on from 20th May – 4th June 2023, HKT 11:00 – 19:00 (Tue to Sun, including public holiday) at Koo Ming Kown Exhibition Gallery, HKBU.
