Type Thursday Tbilisi is a monthly gathering in Tbilisi for type-lovers from all walks of life and all levels of experience. After a two-year hiatus, the format was revived by Erika Ivashkevich and Adelina Shaydullina. The duo tasked graphic designer and poster artist Mikhail Lychkovskiy to design a poster and some additional graphics for the June event that took place at Kera Space. To celebrate the event, Mikhail decided to use a new, playful geometric Onlysans typeface by Daria Cohen (Contemporary Type). The architecture of letters therefore became the basis for the architecture of the poster. The poster was printed at a classic size of 70x100cm and a smaller A3 version, so that it could fit into the compact bulletin boards of cafes and other indoor spaces.

As a graphic designer, typography is vitally important to Mikhail’s work. “I constantly fall in love with fonts and considers the letters themselves beautiful,” says the designer. Thus, he usually bases his works on typographic treatment, trying to extract from the architecture of letters the basis for graphics, grids, and composition in general. For the Type Thursday poster, Mikhail selected Daria Cohen’s Onlysans typeface. As an event about all-things font, he sought a playful, geometric, and low-contrast sans typeface so that it could be used as a source of spare parts for graphic solutions for the entire poster. For this role, Onlysans was the perfect fit.

The aim of the poster was to attract designers who are fond of fonts, so in this instance Mikhail created under the ethos “the more typographic the poster, the better”. He selected the colour palette partially based on the chapter’s brand guidelines, but further enhanced them achieve maximum contrast and visibility in urban communication.

Summarising his passion for poster design, Mikhail tells us; “You (almost) never know what the result will be at the beginning. In the process, you must solve a design puzzle by combining the aesthetic part (as an artist) with the functional part (as a designer), and achieving this solution brings special emotions.”
