Niamh Curran’s latest project, Hire Me, was initially started in February of this year, as she wanted to create some alternative ways that a designer could advertise themselves.
“Everything is online (especially under today’s circumstances) and it leaves little room for tangible experiences and exchanges,” says the graphic designer. Connections between clients and freelancers are often made behind a screen, and while in a number of ways this can be beneficial, finding unusual ways to capture someone’s attention can be far more rewarding and memorable. As such, Niamh’s Please Hire Me project was born on her Instagram page.
She experimented with creating designs for t-shirts, coasters, coffee cups, and tote bags, and with a positive reception Niamh decided to see where else she could take this idea. Currently a Graphic Design student at Ravensbourne University, she spends a lot of her time in London. Here, she witnesses lots of street art, with stickers and posters plastered on lamps, buildings, and railings across the city. This sparked her to imagine that her project could exist within this environment in the form of stickers.
However, there is only so much information that can fit onto a sticker, and Niamh wanted people to be able to instantly view her work. Thus, she decided to incorporate some AR into the design so that a sample of her portfolio could be viewed. She used the Artivive app to incorporate the AR elements and made a portfolio reel in After Effects. “The great thing is that I can update the stickers with new work at any point and replace it using Artivive,” comments Niamh. What started as a fun post, turned into a mini passion project that she has “thoroughly enjoyed” creating.
Niamh’s project proves, that even with the restrictions of living in a pandemic, ways of promoting your work and reaching new clients can still exist outside of the internet. She will be sharing a reel on her Instagram where you can see the stickers in action.
