York-based printmaker, artist and animator Daniel Howden is our latest addition to our official Membership programme. His body of work comprises entirely of linocut, a self-taught craft that captured the heart of the artist in 2011 whilst at college. Being a creative can be quite isolating and lonely at times, however this aspect is actually Howden enjoys the most.

“I enjoyed working in isolation and the lack of supervision means I can make mistakes and learn intuitively. This freedom laid the foundation for the unorthodox approach I use today as my linocuts typically consist of anywhere between 30-70 registrations” says Howden. What informs his work you may ask, is that he takes gets a lot of motivation from his fellow printmakers Sophy Hollington and Jon McNaught who’s work he most admires as well as popular culture and anthropology.

Whilst studying illustration at University in Liverpool, Howden devoted those three years to developing and refining his approach to printmaking through a gnarly amount of trial and error. In his final year, much as most do, things began to click into place and this culminated him making the final 10 of People of Print’s Graduate Print Awards 2015, spurring Howden on. One year later, he managed to go a step better and whilst studying MA illustration in Manchester, was awarded the Anthony Dawson Young Printmaker of the Year award for 2016.

Howden tells us what his experience has been like after finishing his Masters last year: “Since finishing my Masters in 2017 my output has reduced significantly. I decided to take an indefinite break from architecture as I felt I had exhausted it. As a result, my work has become far more considered and personal and this has been really rewarding. My focus has now shifted to animating linocut and working with sound, as I believe this unusual pairing has a lot of un-tapped potential and also opens the door for collaboration. In-between exhibiting and doing bits for Pressing Matters and Dr.Martens, I’ve spent the past year storyboarding and constructing a narrative for an animation that I hope showcases how well lino-mation can work”.
