Megan Hopkin discovered her passion for screen printing and bright and bold colours after studying a level 3 Art and Design course at West Suffolk College, which later led to a Foundation year. Her work explores line and shape, both minimal and geometric, and she is currently in her first year of an Art Practice degree, where she incorporates screen printing as often as possible in her work.
“When I’m in the print room experimenting with composition, shape, texture, and especially colour, I feel at home. This is what I love doing. I’m most happy in this state; I go into my own world and time flies. It took me some time to fully get there, but now I know it is my creative calling.”
Experimenting with screen printing helps Megan to develop and explore her own style. Lately, she has been working on building up layers, whether through paper-cut or photo-stencils, and refining work for several exhibitions. In these works she uses a mixture of transparent and opaque inks in order to create both transparent and block shapes.
Megan’s love for screen printing enables her to express her feelings through the printmaking process. Her use of bright, vibrant colour is energetic and uplifting, reflecting her happy state whilst printing. Practising printing at both college and home, Megan decided to build her own studio. “I benefit from both the focus of printing solo at home and of the collaboration and interaction with other artists in a university environment” explains the artist.
Inspired by art and the work of other artists she views online, Megan takes photographs of her day-to-day travels in order to gain further inspiration to be used as a potential basis for new work. “It’s no surprise, considering the style of the work I make, that the boldest colours capture my eye” she concludes.
