Leigh Bagley is a textile and pattern designer, celebrated for his prominent use of colour and geometric forms. His work redefines contemporary art and pattern for interiors and public buildings, directly taking influence from everyday surroundings and a love of modernist and abstract aesthetics.
Alongside his own collection of prints, wallpapers and fabric, Leigh also works on a range of licensing and commission projects. Currently, he is collaborating with Newmor Wallcoverings on a collection of large scale abstract mural designs for commercial international clients. These works incorporate abstract geometrics in dynamic colour palettes, which have been a signature of the Newmor collection for a number of years.
“Colour, the whole creative process for me starts with colour – I’m slightly obsessed! I’ve always been interested in how other people perceive colour and use it in their own environments. My prints explore interactions of colour through geometric composition, each one meticulously planned, every hue, proportion, saturation and opacity of colour is considered.”
Born and raised just outside Birmingham, Leigh developed his eye for colour and interest in design from an early age. His design career began shortly after graduating from the Royal College of Art in London in 2000. Leigh worked as a freelance knitted textile designer selling to companies including Calvin Klein, Levi, Nicole Fahri, Eddie Bauer, Milk, and Woolmark.
Following his textile design career working in both fashion and interiors, he now shares his passion for colour and textiles as a lecturer at the renowned Glasgow School of Art. In 2012, missing having a creative outlet, Leigh decided to launch his print company. Eager to develop his interest in rich, abstract, graphic print design he produced his first collection of limited edition prints. His work was instantly coveted by leading architecture and interior design companies, and much sort after by private clients.
Through blending traditional design methodologies with digital technology, Leigh’s creations are rife with geometric motifs, forms and above all, colour. “A strong sense of aesthetic underpins all my work, directly taking influence from my everyday surroundings and love of a modernist aesthetic” says the designer. His works are hugely inspired by modernism, the Bauhaus, minimal ceramics, architecture, and interiors, thus are often purchased by global architectural firms as they are ideally suited to minimalist interiors. Leigh would love to work on a design project or to collaborate with Alessi or Marc Newson, whilst his design heroes are Charley Harper, Hella Jongerius and Dieter Rams.
In 2018 he was commissioned by NHS Forth Valley for an innovative commission to design 21 ‘Artwalls’ for the new 116 room Bellfield Centre and GP minor Injuries Clinic, Stirling, Scotland. Alongside this he curated and purchased over 200 contemporary prints of leading and emerging Scottish artists.
Though currently on hold due to the Covid19 Pandemic, Leigh is working on another NHS commission which will hopefully restart in 2021. He states; “I would really love to continue to work within the Healthcare sector sharing my love of colour and pattern. I believe that any interior environment that supports health and well-being should be a homely comfortable space where patients can recover and feel protected. Hospitals should be no different to a luxury hotel, art gallery, wellness centre where you go to recharge and replenish. Inspirational spaces where you can escape. Hospital interiors should be bright and uplifting, taking elements from modern home environments and celebrating them within the hospital context.”
