Taking inspiration from varied fields including mythological creatures, nature, pop culture, and street art, Albuquerque-based printmaker Ayemurs creates enchanting linocut and litho prints.
Ayemurs was first introduced to printmaking in high school where she won awards for her collagraph work. This led her to pursue an education in the arts, and she went on to graduate from the University of New Mexico in 2016 with a bachelors in Studio Art. Here, she spent most of her time experimenting with lithography and screenprint. Ayemurs tells us; “I was really influenced by these poster printing techniques because the idea of spreading art to the masses is really important to me, but I shifted to relief printing after graduating and not having regular access to a studio.”
While in school Ayemurs also started managing a salon, and after graduating decided to continue in education for a nail technician license, as well as an apprenticeship for a permanent cosmetic tattoo license, and later her esthetician license. As of 2023, she circled back around to education and is now a part time teaching artist with several nonprofit groups, bringing easy to understand printmaking classes to groups of all ages and skill levels.
Today, Ayemurs’ balances her creative work in between clients at her salon, where she can work on sketches on her iPad using Procreate as well as drawing on and carving out blocks. When not at the salon, she works from her home studio in her garage which houses her “pride and joy”; a Takach 1836 tabletop press, as well as a lever linoleum press, a provisional letter press, and several tortilla presses. Currently, she predominantly works in linoleum relief, but has recently started learning how to do polymer plate lithography.
Recently, Ayemurs has been working with imagery involving cryptozoology and arthropods, specifically because she really enjoys “learning the stories or facts behind them and getting to share that with viewers”. Typically, her prints are based around whatever hyper focused interest she has at that time, thus she considers it a form of “self portraiture”. Ideas for her designs come from things she enjoys reading or learning about, allowing her to share facts about that particular figure to others.
Ayemurs hopes to one day open a small DIY style venue where other artists can teach their craft to the public. She states; “I strongly believe in affordable arts education and would like to offer more workshops to people outside of the school systems that I currently work in”. She is looking forward to growing as an artist and attending more print-specific showcases and events so that she can become part of a wider community of printmakers.
