Living nestled in the mountains of Western North Carolina, you can find Becca Ward creating original hand-drawn and carved relief block prints. Printmaking is Becca’s greatest love and has been the one thing throughout her life that has remained constant and prominent in her identity. She attended Kendall College of Art and Design for Printmaking, and has been printing and operating her Etsy business since for 10+ years.
“Being a printmaker allows me the freedom to express my most raw and genuine visions,” describes Becca. Her inspiration comes from a wide range of sources; whether it’s a brief image drifting through her mind during meditation, flowers dancing along a trail on a hike, manifestations, or lyrics from a song, when she sees it and it resonates, Becca creates it the best way she can. She states; “It brings me such joy designing detailed prints with a hidden twist or story intertwined within. Thus, creating space for a special one-of-a-kind journey and unique interpretation for the viewer alone.”
Thus far, her Sunshine Daydream print has been her most memorable and fun carving journey; “It was the middle of spring here in North Carolina so everything was brightening up and blooming. I felt completely inspired by what was around me at the time. The idea for the print came to me in a dream where I was attending a concert in a field and everyone around me had flower heads.” The design brings together her passions; music, dancing, and springtime, and the grass alone took over 13 hours to carve! “Some of my favourite works of art are super detailed, single-coloured prints,” says the printmaker.
Recently, Becca purchased a Woodzilla Press which she describes as an utter “game changer”, and has led her to feel more confident exploring multi-layered prints. As a result, her works are evoking a colourful pop-art vibe and taking her on an experimental journey wherein her art is shape-shifting as she goes.
Although she loves playing around with scrap linoleum and mini-prints, Becca is currently working on a few concepts for her next larger-sized print which involves lots of nature, figures, and unusual perspectives. As a huge Phish fan, she is also looking forward to their summer tour and making a special limited edition tour print.
This year, Becca is hoping to involve herself more in her local community and is signing up for her first in-person market. Although she is “equally terrified and excited” she will continue to create and morphing as she flows through her printmaking journey.
