“Daydreaming of new places, new skies, and new views was a large part of my childhood,” says London-based screenprinter and artist Caroline Tomlinson. She continues; “I didn’t know what these places and spaces would look like or what the journey would bring, but I always knew that, at some point, there would be a new chapter—a new outlook, with new possibilities. That thought kept me moving forward. It wasn’t easy, but then again, a good story never is.”
It was these childhood feelings that inspired Caroline’s latest duo of works, To Dream of Adventures and Way Out on a Sea of Dreams. These two new screen print editions, both hand finished with gold and silver foil, explore this sense of childhood freedom through her use of line and lettering. Putting a positive outlook onto the feelings she experienced, Caroline presents that it is this daydreaming that can get you through periods of feeling hopelessly sad and lost. She comments; “You carry dreams with you whilst finding your way – its your compass, sometimes you end up off the map – and sometimes you can’t believe how glorious the adventure is.”
This pair of one-colour screen prints, printed in editions of 50, exhibit Caroline’s characteristic use of blue, but with added foil detailing. Caroline concludes; “If I could go back and tell that little girl, who would dream of going to see NYC and Africa, I would tell her that you’ll become stronger for it all. It will break your heart at times, but you will go and see the most beautiful things, and places.”
