Having graduated from Central St. Martin’s London in 2002 with an MA, Caroline Tomlinson has since worked as an illustrator for clients worldwide. Her illustration work has been used in range of applications across campaigns, retails spaces, textiles, book jackets, and even wine labels. Caroline’s work has also featured in a selection of publications, including Hunger, Netflix Queue, The Guardian, Travel&Leisure, and Vogue.
Her sketchbook and passport have always been inseparable, and a huge source of inspiration for her work. Caroline spent several years living in cities in the Southern hemisphere. The ilustrator tells us; “This heightened my wanderlust and when I finally returned to London there was a true sense of come home – a reminder as to whats truly important – a sense of belonging. This is a theme I am beginning to explore within my work.”
Caroline’s style combines beautiful inky flourishes in an endless exploration of trial and error; “This is at the heart of my process – I believe in making marks and embracing ‘happy accidents’ – a constant experimenting in order to retains fullness of character and spirit. This helps my work exhibit a loose control which is full of energy.”
Her recent series of editioned silkscreen prints, Summer Blues, is inspired by soaking up the end of the season; the last of blue skies and blue seas, with the female form captured in simple linear forms – languishing in laid back moments. Each piece is made up of three one colour screen prints, using the reclining female form to explorw a new technique within her line work; drawing with masking fluid to create fluid organic lines.
Currently, Caroline is working on various commercial illustration jobs for Netflix and The Hilton Group. Her illustration work always runs parallel alongside her printmaking and painting, each influencing the other helping her practice to evolve.
Caroline also teaches and works with undergraduate students at various Universities and Art Colleges as a visiting lecturer in Illustration. She is currently planning to build a collection of pieces around the concept of ‘Belonging’ with a goal of exhibiting in the next year.
