Cats and Monsters is the debut exhibition from Mexican linocut artist Hugo Guillen. Taking place from October 19th until October 31st at Sueltate el pelo, the show brings together a series of black and white prints that blend the grace of cats with mythical creatures from folklore. Each piece explores themes of nature, mythology, and the supernatural, reflecting the artist’s interest in the intersection of the everyday and the extraordinary. Attendees can discover works inspired by legends including La Llorona and El Chupacabras.
Hugo’s art is deeply influenced by the things he loves and the life he has lived. For instance, cats are a recurring theme in his work. He comments; “Their carefree, “I don’t care” attitude resonates with me on a personal level. For me, cats represent the ultimate form of escapism—they are free, playful, and blissfully unaware of the burdens of adulthood. If I could trade places with a house cat, lounging around without a care in the world, I’d do it in a heartbeat.”
On the other hand, the collection also highlights Hugo’s fascination with the macabre, which is deeply rooted in his Mexican heritage. “Growing up, death was never something to be feared, but rather a natural part of life, intertwined with rich traditions and folklore,” says the printmaker. He continues; “Our mythology is filled with brutal, eerie tales that can easily inspire horror-themed designs.” Living in Bern, Switzerland, adds a further layer to Hugo’s work. The contrast between his Mexican roots and the serene, orderly Swiss environment gives him a unique perspective that often comes through within his art.
