Clare Morgan’s latest body of work, Bloomed, marks a departure from her previous practice. Known for intricate compositions combining portraiture with botanical elements, Clare has stripped back to focus solely on the floral form. This new direction has allowed for a more intimate and expressive exploration of the flowers themselves.
“I felt a strong desire to simplify my work and allow the plants to take centre stage,” explains Clare. She continues; “By removing the figurative elements, I’ve been able to concentrate on the pure essence of each subject”.
This shift in focus has coincided with a return to a more intuitive approach to printmaking, as she tells us; “I have embraced a more spontaneous process, sketching directly into the lino without pre-planning. This has enabled me to capture the energy and character of each plant in a fresh, immediate way.”
A key feature of the Bloomed series is the incorporation of hand-carved frames around the floral motifs. Clare states, “I wanted to create a sense of containment while also allowing the plants to burst through them. These frames also offer a glimpse into my process, as the carved marks surrounding them, deliberately remain to reveal the physicality of the printmaking.”
Colour plays a vital role in the series. By printing onto brightly coloured mulberry paper, Clare has introduced a new level of vibrancy and depth to her work. “The contrast between the paper blocks of colour and bold line creates a visually exciting tension,” comments the printmaker.
Bloomed celebrates the natural world and is a testament to Clare’s ongoing exploration of printmaking. Through this new series, the artist invites viewers to slow down and appreciate the intricate beauty and complexity of something we see every day in a new way.
