“It was a typical, sunny day in Los Angeles, California, USA, when I saw this pristine, classic Beauty parked on the street. I snapped a few photos on my phone and went home with visions of the 1959 Cadillac Eldorado dancing in my head,” reduction printmaker Dave Lefner tell us. He continues; “I knew immediately that it had to be a big print…”.
However, being limited by the size of his large press (a Conrad Machine Co. monotype, hank-cranked press 60in x 30in or 152.4cm x 76.2cm), Dave opted for a Triptych. His medium of choice is Reduction Linocut, which can be difficult even on the smallest project, but he was up for the challenge. The 4B pencil drawing alone took him 20 hours, and another 2 hours to transfer it to the three linoleum blocks. In total, it took Dave 160 working hours (over 24 days) to complete Cadillac Dreams.
The piece is printed in 11 colour stages and in an edition of 5, using Cranfield Traditional Relief oil-based inks on Rives BFK Heavyweight paper. The final piece measures 38in x 63in (96.52cm x 160.02cm).
“During these trying times in the World, I realize everything else seems a bit trivial. That being said, I do believe in the power of Art to give us a sense hope, comfort or maybe just a reprieve from the madness,” concludes Dave.
