David Wischer makes art prints, animations, and installations. He has recently been experimenting with Risograph printing and has also been pairing screen prints with art zines, trying to find an interesting way to show zines in a gallery setting.
David is an Assistant Professor in Digital and Print Media at University of Kentucky where he teaches courses in Zines, Screen Printing, Graphic Design, and Typography. He majored in Graphic Design in college at Northern Kentucky University and took Printmaking courses near the end of his time there. David screen printed at home for a few years and showed his work around the Cincinnati area before going to graduate school. He went on to achieve an MFA in Printmaking at Purdue University, where he focused on Screen Printing, Monotype, and Electronic Art.
“I usually have a lot of things cooking at once,” says the printmaker, which sometimes get combined into the same print work. Screen Print has always been his go-to in the print studio; “Process printing with CMYK is still fascinating to me after all these years”, and David often adds some gold leaf or varnish to these prints. The latest technique he has been experimenting with, Risograph, has become a fun and quick way to get a lot of ideas out of his head and onto paper. His artworks are constructed digitally with Illustrator and Photoshop, and a further unique element is added by the fact that he prints on found paper for installations, be that magazine pages, baseball cards, or postcards.
David’s work is inspired by human behaviour in a digital world. He tells us; “Social media and technology are constantly evolving and I tend to think about how to make something tangible like a print or zine to comment on such complicated and often silly ideas.”
He concludes; “I hope that my art practice and teaching continue to evolve together. I glean a lot of ideas and perspectives from my students. My own assignments tend to prompt experimentation that leads to new work.”
