The Alcohol Ink Print Collection is Dan Foster, aka Dxnfoster_Designs’, second major project. Dan is a digital and abstract artist and designer based in Ludlow, Shropshire. After completing his education in Fine Arts at Hereford Sixth Form College, where he dabbled in the exploration of abstract artworks, his passion has lead onto the manipulation of colour and form to create visually abstract artworks and prints. For this project, Dan blended alcohol ink techniques, digital manipulation, and adobe Photoshop techniques.
He began the series by separating his inks and choosing the colours he would like to use. “At this stage, it is important that I pick the exact invert of the end result, as throughout the digital phase I invert my images to draw out depths and hidden details you cannot see in the original artwork” states the artist. Dan bleeds the inks together with isopropyl and dilute acids, giving the medium a volatile and unpredictable nature. By drying different areas at different thicknesses, Dan settles the ink at different rates which in turn dictates the strength and form of the colours. This lack of control is then reintroduced by digitally editing in Procreate and Lightroom, which he then fine-tunes in Photoshop. The Alcohol Ink Print Collection is printed on various surfaces, including Hahnemühle fine art paper, acrylic, wood, and glass.
The project was hugely inspired by his previous project, Fluid 4k, in which Dan dabbled with high quality 4k digital designs flowing with colour in panoramic sizes. “I wanted to develop this into prints in much larger sizes and so The Alcohol Ink Print Collection was born” explains Dan. The designer is currently working on collaborating with other artists, and concludes; “The Alcohol Ink Print Collection is something that I am incredibly proud of and I hope to broaden my use of mediums and continue to explore this ongoing project even further“.
