Our new platform, Gradspotters, is a space dedicated to championing recent graduates in the fields of print and design. Providing a stepping stone to success within the industry, successful applicants to the scheme will benefit from a range of perks including features on our platforms, personalised mentorship, and exclusive goodies.
One of our incredible applicants so far is Sarah Vines, a 2023 graduate of RCA Print, whose work combines drawing, traditional techniques, and screen print to examine the relationship people have with their spaces and their chosen objects. As part of her application, she shared with us Three Spaces, Three Places, a triptych of 8-layer screenprints depicting portraits of people living in and around London.
This series explores modern day ‘home’ from a range of living situations, exploring similarities and differences across themes of sentimentality, objects of importance, sensory stimuli, and what makes their space feel like ‘home’. Sarah went to each subject’s residences and by their lead chose a room to depict. She drew objects that they had decorated the room with, and in some cases had gathered to present to her. She also found her own items in the room which may have been overlooked by their owners, but were clearly integral to the space and their identity.
Sarah sketched and photographed these objects and rooms as well as drawing portraits of his subjects in relaxed positions, led by them. As well as gathering visual records, she also recorded an interview with each subject. They were asked 11 simple questions about their space and home situation, and she used this to inform each print.
