Born in Macau, Ivy Mei moved to London half her life ago. She graduated from Byam Shaw School of Art, Central St Martins in 2011 with a fdA in Fine Art, and in 2012, she graduated from University of East London with a BA in Fine Art. Ivy’s work is a delightful clash of craft and fine art; her works are not paintings alone, but combine techniques from multiple disciplines that expand and embrace visual language. This process is energetic, eclectic, and experimental, but by creating editions Ivy finds a structure and strategy to her working process that is not only therapeutic during creation, but also stays with the work afterwards. She states; “My overarching aim is to combine the freehand creativeness of abstract painting with the controlled- (yet uncontrolled-ness) of screen printing”.

Ivy’s practice is currently focused on screen printing, painting, and collage; art forms that she has loved working with since her days in education. She uses methods including stencil and mono screen printing, and collects printed papers to make college pieces. Experiencing landscapes is a huge part of her creative research. Ivy takes walks, visits foreign countries, and explores hidden areas to gain inspiration. It is not only the grander landscapes she witnesses on these journeys that inspire her work, but also the patterns she sees in nature inspire her mark making. Ivy also looks to the beauty of found objects, and on these journeys finds “detritus” that she determines relevant to her practice.

As well as working as a practising artist, she has curated shows at A side B side Gallery and collaborated with artists Adam Bartlett and Jeanine Saurette, among others. Ivy’s work has been exhibited in many interesting locations: 12 of her artworks were exhibited on the walls of a flat within the setting of the domineering Barbican Estate, and Deptford Cinema also became a gallery space when she hosted a solo show on International Women’s Day 2020. “Exhibitions offer a way to reach out beyond my studio and speak to people as they experience my work. Group shows excite me because I feel that my work is so open and filled with light that it has an inviting space to be put with other artworks” says Ivy.

With two other burning passions outside of art; dance music and food, Ivy hopes to soon work on more collaborations with record labels and brands.
