Joanna Groves graduated from De Montfort University in 2018 with a BA Honours degree in Fine Art. It was during her studies that she began screen printing, and developed her unique style that incorporates and juxtaposes both printing and painting. Her work is semi-abstract; Joanna uses screen printing in order to represent her subject, and enhances this with a variety of mediums including paint, pastels, and pencils.
The artist’s work is primarily inspired by places she has visited, particularly the sea and the environment of Wales’ coastlines which Joanna travels to all year round. In her prints she reinterprets these trips by capturing the atmosphere of the place at that time, illustrating different marks, textures and movements within the sea.
“I am drawn to the sea as a place that you can get lost in the repetitiveness of the waves, endless horizons and the sheer scale of the sea. I feel the same calm and peace when creating my work, as I do when visiting these sea side places.”
More recently, her prints have also included more architectural elements, which not only reflect her memories of her travels abroad, but also capture the essence of these places. These pieces act as a tactile representation of Joanna’s travel memories, but also, as she has not added any grounding elements, viewers can relate her works to their own memories.
Joanna currently works from her home studio in Mid Wales, creating artworks from recent photographs which she releases as collections on her website.
