Jude Maguire is a printmaker based in the west country city of Bath, UK. She is inspired by architectural landscapes that have evolved through use by the people whose activities and occupancy share that landscape. Jude’s screen prints become edited illusions of physical forms with colour used to disrupt the spatial orientation, allowing shapes and shadows to be integral parts of the image.
Jude’s working life began with roles as a Graphic Designer, however she always had a love for printmaking, In 2022 she graduated from UWE with an MA in Multidisciplinary Printmaking and has been developing her practice ever since.
Her working processes vary but all start by simply walking through our towns and cities, drawing and photographing the urban landscapes. All of Jude’s images begin as drawings and are then edited digitally, looking at the shapes and shadows created by different light patterns. During this time the ideas and means of expression become inseparable as the image develops.
As a printmaker, she has always drawn inspiration from architecture and her fascination with the social and cultural activities that shape these spaces and buildings. Colour is also a very important aspect of her work as bright and vivid colours are used to define and enhance different elements of the buildings, inviting the viewer to reinterpret each structure whilst creating new narratives of space.
Currently, Jude’s work is evolving to combine different techniques such as laser cutting and embossing, and she is also starting to explore more iconic buildings, all whilst still retaining her signature use of bright colours.
