Julie Pernet is a French illustrator and printmaker currently based in Brussels, Belgium. Her artwork is rooted in narrative with reference to naïve art, Miyazaki’s animés, and the poetic work of watercolourist Jean-Michel Folon. Her illustrations are often composed of wide worlds where tiny humans and natural elements cohabit and silently interact.
Julie has been drawing since early childhood and has tested many practices/techniques such as acrylics, oil paintings, charcoal, and pastels, before falling in love with the organic and unpredictable practice of watercolour. She likes to create her own watercolours from pigments and to explore new colour combinations.
Her artwork is nourished from her experience as a human-rights advocate and a political scientist. She draws most of her inspiration from her love for wildlife, biodiversity, and ecosystems, but also from a growing eco-anxiety. “The question of our impact on the non-human world has been with me as long as I can remember. I have turned this feeling of absurdity into a source of inspiration,” says the illustrator. Her work also covers topics such as recovery, mental health, and solidarity.
“My ideas often sparkle before I fall asleep, when my brain processes the world information at a lower pace. It can comes from a word, a reading or a situation I witnessed. I record the idea in a vocal note and let my sleepy brain play with the concept.”
Julie works mostly in analogue, with very little sketching and keeps numeric editing to a minimum. After training at les Ateliers du Toner in Brussels, she now also includes Risograph printing within her practice; “I absolutely love playing with the different inks that Riso offers. It is fascinating to see how many variations a same illustration can take when using different ink combinations.”After 2 years of exploring personal compositions, Julie is now starting to work with the editorial and publishing world; “I am very excited with the opportunities brought by philanthropic magazines and books, but also by children books. I would love to illustrate articles, books and covers, both for adults and children.” She is now working on a graphic novel starring the relationship between humans and their environment.
