Karin Bell is a linocut artist and architect from Huntsville, Alabama. She received her Bachelor of Architecture from California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo and spent a gruelling year studying for her six demanding licensure exams. Currently, Karin works as a project architect for one of the oldest legacy firms in the region. She discovered printmaking two years ago, needing a way to recharge from the licensure process and a reprieve from the rigour and screen-heavy nature of her career.
“I am deeply drawn to the tactile, low-tech nature of linocut, and endeavour to keep technology out of the process as much as possible. Although I’ve been creative in many ways for all my life, it wasn’t until I put gouge to lino that I finally felt proud of my work. Somehow the hard surface forces me to be myself, so that what I create is truly my own.”
Karin’s practice focuses on what she refers to as “accessible expressions of faith”. Her designs are the product of her own devotions, but she enjoys the duality of manifesting her personal revelations while simultaneously maintaining generous freedom of interpretation. She mainly works with Battleship Gray linoleum, Speedball Professional inks, and various papers (always exploring the world of paper!).
This past year, her work was exhibited at Lowe Mill Arts & Entertainment, the largest privately-owned arts facility in the South, where is she also awaiting a studio space. In 2022, Karin looks forward to continue exploring larger works, tackling reduction printing, and adding textiles, papermaking, and natural dyeing to her repertoire.
