Based in Dundee, Scotland, Katie Ravenscraig is a printmaker and illustrator working at Dundee Contemporary Arts’ (DCA) print workshop. Katie conducts a wide variety of projects, including zines, Riso printed stationery, and silkscreen prints. Her practice also explores the blend between digital and traditional techniques. Her printed goods explore themes of human connection, light and colour, and other worlds, and also reflect her love for science fiction and the surreal. Exploring symbols, journeys, unusual places, and narrative, Katie is always looking to tell a story through visual means.

After graduating from Edinburgh College of Art and Dundee University, with qualifications in Intermedia Art and Fine Art, in 2013 Katie started as an intern at DCA, later becoming a Print Studio Co-Coordinator. “I love working at DCA because I get to work with an amazing range of artists and pass on traditional printmaking skills,” says the printmaker. Here, she also gets to run projects such as Riso Soup, a collaborative Risograph publication project. Katie also works from her own studio in Dundee, where she creates paintings and digital pieces, and runs her Riso printed stationery brand, Studio Ravenscraig, that’s all about bold, bright colours and shapes.

“I love the texture and feel of traditional ink illustrations,” comments Katie on her inspirations. From an early age she has been inspired by the works of Quentin Blake, and throughout her teenage years looked to the likes of Yoshitaka Amano. Today, she finds herself surrounded by inspiring artists in her local arts scene and online. Katie’s love for dark, surreal stories, and music, fashion, and travel, are also clearly evident in her designs. She states; “I love experiencing new places, appreciating local culture and scenery. I am very into photography, and have a particular passion for instant film. I always take some with me when I travel.”

Katie is looking forward to making more prints in 2021, and working on some collaborations with musicians, zine makers, and illustrators.
