Keith Vaughn is and American painter whose recent work has taken an abstract turn. His work has moved away from the figurative to cut out shapes, grids, gradients and photographic collage. His painting have a disctinct Californian feel with palm trees, pink and orange hues, coupled with stark white and black backdrops. The feeling ranges from Memphis to Matisse and then crosses into minimal graphic based work with simple text coupled with gradient boxes. Mysteriously I could find little information about Keith Vaughns work after finding his Tumblr page earlier this month. I emailed him and asked him to tell me more.
I received an MFA in Painting from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2004. Since then, I have shown paintings internationally and in domestic cities including New York and Los Angeles. I now live and work in the San Francisco Bay Area. My recent work is based on stock photography, typically seen as desktop wallpaper and inspirational posters, and suggests a dislocated experience of the present, one that is mediated by banality, technology, and ones own daydreaming. As a balance, I also present stock-imagery and Romantic landscape painting as a celebration of the visionary impulse. When I am not painting I enjoy playing tennis.
