La Hache

La Hache is the printmaking practice of Sonia Landry; a combination of her two professions, her 6 years of study, and a way to exploit and put together her knowledge. This creative output began with the making of wooden jewellery, where Sonia played with the balance of shapes and colours. Conducting graphic exercises through the medium of wood, Sonia made jewels by cutting with wood chisels and hand-sanding her designs.

It wasn’t until later in her creative endeavours that Sonia discovered linocut print whilst studying Graphic Design. She immediately fell in love with the technique, and having already learned to sculpt in wood, it was an easy progression to linoleum. Sonia comments; “This technique helps me to relax, focus on what I’m doing in the moment, and share my vision of the world.”

Wanting to produce authentic imagery that reflects things close to her heart, Sonia decided to focus on her province of Quebec as her main source of inspiration. As she travels through the area, she takes pictures and translates theses images of landscapes and buildings into linocut print. Currently, she mostly produces linear mountain landscapes to highlight the shape of the mountains she witnesses. Sonia prints across various substrates to add further dimensions to her works; printing on wood veneer allows for the wood grain to form part of the illustration; printing on recycled paper from old books save them from the trash; and handmade recycled paper adds an artisanal touch.

Sonia is looking forward to more travels around Quebec and showcasing ‘her’ beauty, and taking part in more exhibitions and residencies across the region.
