Born and raised in Mexico City, Fernanda Martinez moved to Oakland in 2015 to study an international business program in UC Berkeley. It was no coincidence that being surrounded by a new culture, new people, and a very diverse environment, that Fernanda felt the urge to find a new way to keep her creativity running. Thus, she created LA TINTA; her personal brand.
Fernanda’s Mexican heritage has a profound impact on the way she has developed her artistic vision and themes; “all my life I’ve been exposed to vibrant and colourful places, textiles, architecture and florid traditions that have shaped my art practice and style”. Living in the bay area for the past seven years, where the art community is robust and supportive, has contributed to Fernanda’s growth as a maker and creative. Here, she has been able to exhibit her work at galleries, shops, and has even expanded her practice to include murals over the bay area.
Since the creation of LA TINTA, Fernanda has collaborated with a variety of brands and retailers by licensing her designs for packaging, apparel, and fabric collections. Through these collaborations she has had the opportunity to connect with other makers and expand her vision and creativity.
“One aspect that has distinguished my business from others is that it has broadened into different products and expressions; some artworks are more than just art pieces, they could be patterns, art prints, murals, wearables, packaging and many other projects. Having a variety of products has helped me to expand across bay area retail shops and curated online platforms besides my own online shop.”
Fernanda is looking forward to further growing her artistic practice and exhibiting her art across the country, and eventually worldwide. As a muralist, she hopes to collaborate with galleries and companies, placing her murals in more public spaces where they will reach a wider audience.
