Laura Obon

Born in Tenerife, Spain, Laura Obón is an abstract artist that creates colourful geometric collages. She began painting and making collages at an early age while still living in Tenerife, a place surrounded by the sea, beautiful mountains, and magical light; a unique landscape that she still carries within and recalls in a cathartic way during her creative process.

Highly fascinated by the simplicity of forms and the bold colours of Carmen Herrera, and by Joan Miró’s playful reflections of the subconscious mind, Laura creates abstract compositions governed by the power of colour and intuition. She looks for inspiration in the everyday, in the subconscious, and sometimes in proverbial books, finding that the concise language of proverbs can convey many ideas in a few words, just like her simple abstract compositions.

Thanks to the particular flexibility given by the mediums she uses, Laura is able to constantly change direction and – by adding or subtracting elements to the composition – to freely express her sometimes contrasting feelings of harmony and tension. She diverges from the realms of reason, permitting only her inner self to guide her collages of cut-out shapes, where emotions become the focal point. Circles, pointy triangles, squares, dots and sharp lines appear suspended, nearly falling, or trapped between other geometrical forms or negative space, narrating the artist’s emotional state while delving into the subconscious.

Influenced by Alain de Botton and J. Armstrong’s book Art as Therapy and W. Kandinsky’s Concerning the Spiritual in Art, Laura is deeply invested in using art as a tool to improve our emotional and social worlds. She views art as an experience for the soul and seeks to explore the therapeutic effects of making and sharing art as an antidote to mundane life. For the artist, art can encourage us to connect with our spiritual being while experiencing the soothing, comforting, and at the same time exciting effects of being surrounded by it.

Laura moved to the UK in 1998 to undertake a B.A. in Fine Art at Sheffield Hallam University, graduating in 2003, and she later received an M.A. in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins in 2007. After completing a P.G.C.E. in Art and Design at Goldsmith, University of the Arts, today, Laura teaches art while working on establishing her artistic career.
