Lovely Day is a personal illustration project by Kelly Nichols, working under the name Kidnichols, that celebrates creativity as a gentle, everyday practice. Centered on a cozy, lived-in studio space, the piece reflects how making can be both vulnerable and deeply comforting, offering creativity as something safe, familiar, and sustaining rather than performative.
The illustration draws inspiration from Nichols’ love of dollhouses and from studio days where creating feels light and effortless. The scene is filled with small, intentional details that reflect her current creative interests, including painting, collaging, and reading. Rather than presenting an idealised workspace, the studio feels inhabited and personal, shaped by routine, curiosity, and quiet joy.

Although created digitally using Illustrator and Photoshop, Lovely Day carries a strong tactile quality. Nichols leans into her background in print production by incorporating nostalgic halftone textures, bringing a sense of hands-on making into the digital image. Bold colour, confident linework, and layered texture work together to create a space that feels warm and approachable, blurring the line between illustration and environment.
At the heart of the project is the idea of the studio as a place to slow down. The illustration invites viewers to linger, notice details, and imagine themselves inside the space. Nichols describes the intention behind the work in her own words: “On my favourite studio days, creating feels light, sunny, and effortless. I wanted this piece to capture that feeling and turn it into a place you can step into.”

Based in Philadelphia, Nichols’ wider practice focuses on finding meaning in small moments and translating emotion into playful, character-driven worlds. Lovely Day sits comfortably within that approach, presenting creativity not as an outcome, but as a state of being, one rooted in comfort, curiosity, and care.
