The Smiley Face has been the subject for many an artist over the years, from POP Art to graffiti, it has been reimagined and reinvented many times. Inspired by its many iterations, London-based screen printer Mark Frendo decided to have a go at creating his own.

Mark’s first attempt at a recreation of the iconic symbol was Acid Rain, however, he was unhappy with the final piece so decided to have another go. His second attempt, Danger UXARD, was his winning design. Mark’s unique take on the prominent symbol is characteristic of his signature style which uses parody and humour. UXARD stands for ‘Unexploded Acid Rain Drop’, which is also further reflected in the teardrop shape of his smiley face design.

Screen printed in 2 colours, Mark used Black 4.0 from culture hustle for the eyes. He tells us; “I wanted to see how it differed from the black that I usually use. The photographs do not really do it justice, it is very black!”
The A4 print is a Limited Edition of 15 printed onto 310 gsm paper, available to buy here.
