Marta Dyer-Smith is an experimental printmaker and YouTuber specialising in collagraph printmaking. The Suffolk-based artist’s current practice involves the mixing of various different printmaking techniques to achieve unexpected results.
Recently, Marta has been experimenting with all kinds of printmaking in her new series of prints focused on local Suffolk scenes. The pieces began in her sketchbook where she drew some little sketches outside with oil pastels. From these sketches Marta then creates abstract landscapes, picking elements from each drawing to turn into larger prints in her studio. So far this process has involved the creation of a monoprint background and relief stamps from lino, as well as some drypoint elements which she then printed intaglio on her etching press. Marta also used newsprint mask to get her desired shape. She comments; “I love mixing printmaking techniques as you can end up with very unique results otherwise not possible.”
Marta exhibits in and around Suffolk, Essex, and London. She focuses a lot of her time on sharing her printmaking discoveries on her YouTube channel which has allowed her to form connections with printmakers all over the world.
