Plymouth-based screen printer, Vince Handford, who works under the pseudonym, Memori Prints, has recently released a new duo of striking screen prints. The two prints; Print is Dead and Stork by the River exemplify has collage-like approach to the printing technique, and utilise his signature combination of graphic patterns, textures, and bright colours.
The first print in the release, Print Is Dead, is a three-colour silkscreen on Bright Red Colorplan Paper, created as a response to those that told Vince that print is a dying art form, and that digital design is the future. Vince describes; “Digital certainly has it place but I think there will always be a need for physical object which we can touch, feel and interact with, whether it’s a book, a print, a painting or a vinyl record. I can make my designs on a computer screen but there is nothing to me that looks the same as the way a screen print does when it physically exists. It’s tactile, it’s the way the ink sits on the page and the effects you get where the inks overlap.”
The second piece is four-colour screen print produced in an edition of 50. Stork By The River is a concept that Vince has been contemplating printing for a while. He states; “I really just wanted to show a bird fishing by the river but in quite a graphical style and with the layers overlapping/overprinting each other. I often try to create prints that I think I would have liked as a child.”
As a lover of the natural world, Vince’s designs often incorporate animals or plants. His prints usually begin with an image of an animal which he then builds the rest of the design around. Vince then combines this imagery with graphic patterns or textures and bright colours. His background in design continues to influence his prints, inspiring him to play around with composition and make use of negative space. “I often like to work in a collage style and arrange the parts of my design in a way that’s unexpected,” says Vince.
For both of the new prints, Vince reused elements from previous prints, but also incorporated new elements and changed the composition. He created the layers in Illustrator, and then used the printed acetates to register the elements of the design. He explains; “I carry out a few test prints to see how the colours work together and to check of any potential issues. Once I’m happy with everything then I’ll go ahead and print the full edition.”
Currently, Vince is working on some prints based on Greek Mythology, focusing on Medusa, and inspired by one of his past creations that was centred on the Minotaur. Keep your eyes peeled for more soon!
