Working from the beautiful southwest of Germany, more precisely from Reutlingen, the so-called “gateway to the Swabian Alb”, by day Miriam Kross is a media designer and illustrator, but at night you can find her at her little desk, where she designs, carves, and prints her own lino prints and woodcuts.
Miriam rediscovered relief printing a few years ago, and began developing her style to create experimental modern prints that combine relief printing with street art and other artistic elements. Each of her pieces is lovingly handcrafted and produced in limited small series. Miriam carefully selects all the motifs, draws them by hand, usually digitally on an iPad, and then artistically transfers them to paper. Each print is unique; from simple and stylised, to detailed and playful.
Inspiration for her work comes from everyday things; conversations with friends or her two now grown-up children and her husband, in nature, or in the Swabian culture in which she grew up. However, she states; “But a big aspect is also my curiosity. I love learning curious facts about things big and small”.
Working with standard gray linoleum because “it is best suited to very detailed motifs”, Pfeil knives, and water-based paints from Schmincke, Miriam often prints onto beautiful handmade papers or Japanese washi papers, giving her prints an extra special and unique finish. “There is something to suit every taste in my range. Whether it’s a small mini print or a print in A3 format – I’m sure you’ll soon find your favourite picture here too,” says the printmaker.
Looking to get creative? Then Miriam also has various DIY sets on offer; from simple print sets for children, to linocut templates and textile printing with bright colours. Each set contains all the materials and tools you need to get started right away.
All prints and other products are available through Miriam’s online store or at various markets in the Stuttgart region.
