Neve Clarke is a visual fine artist currently based in Cornwall, UK. Since graduating from Falmouth University in 2021 with a First Class Hons degree in Fine Art, Neve has continued to develop her contemporary print practice. Working in a contemporary art gallery in St Ives alongside working as a printmaking technician, she has fully immersed herself in the arts which continues to inform her own practice.
Working primarily on etching plates, Neve has developed a laborious, repetitive process that allows her to form an almost meditative state when producing work. She starts by spending time reflecting in the landscape and becoming aware of shapes and marks that occur around her. She then translates this in the studio by cutting her metal plates into unusual and complex shapes inspired by organic forms she has seen in the landscape. Neve then immerses herself in the mark-making process, often looking inwards and reflecting on the themes present in the collection she is producing, which is then reflected in the emotive and raw marks she engraves onto her plates. These marks create a visual language which convey the ideas and themes she is working with to her audience.
Neve is currently producing a new collection of work, He Loves me, He Loves me not, due to be fully released in Autumn 2022. The collection is inspired by:
“When I was young I remember picking flowers and playing ‘He loves me, He loves me not’, questioning the daisies and urging them to tell me if the person I loved indeed loved me back. The uncertainty of whether love is reciprocated is something sooner or later we have all faced . This collection explores that. Exploring love, heartbreak and growth, I am producing a collection of petal prints exploring the uncertainty of love and the process of growth in the wake of heartbreak.”
Like in many of her projects, Neve intertwines her own personal experiences with references to the Cornish landscape as she works with organic, abstracted imagery to translate her thoughts and feelings to her viewer. Creating work about topics that are personal to the artist allows her to portray a quiet sensitivity and vulnerability; fully giving herself to her work and practice allowing for a contemplative and thoughtful space to emerge when viewing her work.
In 2022 Neve was awarded the Cultivator graduate start up award, giving her the means to continue to grow and expand her practice. She aims to use this as an opportunity to complete her current collection of work and showcase it to a wider audience through a solo show later this year. Neve additionally aims to move to a larger studio so that she is able to host workshops and form further collaborations with other artists and organisations.
