Pernille Sand first fell in love with reduction linoleum printmaking many years ago after some fantastic Havana artists in Cuba introduced her to the technique. The printmaker tells us; “I already knew how to do linoprints, but to do prints with more colours and with this complicated technique was new and very exciting to me. Now I can’t stop carving and printing! For me it’s like an addiction.”

Currently, Pernille is focusing her practice into printing portraits on black paper. This project was started as a challenge to herself, as she normally prints on white paper and starts by printing the lightest colour. However, when using black paper, Pernille starts with the darkest colour. “I enjoy the challenge of doing things in a new way and I really love the effect on the colours when printing a light colour over a dark one – the darker colour shines through a tiny bit and gives it such a lovely graphic look,” states Pernille.

Pernille is based in Copenhagen, Denmark. She is a trained art teacher and teaches lino and reduction printmaking workshops. In her local community she shares a design shop with 9 other creatives, where she shows and sells her art and hosts workshops.
