Originally from Nottingham and now based in Manchester, UK, Sarah Wilson works commercially within editorial and animation, as well as making illustrated prints and products for her own shop. She graduated from Manchester School of Art in 2018 with a BA (Hons) in Illustration with Animation, and went on to work on a series of animation projects, branching out to illustration later on when she became freelance in 2020.
Alongside her commercial and shop work, Sarah also hosts, co-ordinates, and facilitates design workshops; “I love working with and meeting new people, and sharing my love of drawing with all ages and abilities. It’s an area I didn’t think I’d explore, but it’s formed a big part of my career as a freelancer.”
Sarah’s work is rooted in both reference and observation; she is never without a sketchbook to quickly document what she sees, yet also looks to historical objects and curiosities as a main source of inspiration. She comments; “I’m not really drawn to a particular time period, but I do find myself looking at Victorian objects quite a lot. I’m also interested in costume and look at vintage circus and costumes often.” Sarah’s love for the feline and the celestial are also often reflected within her work, with cat and moon motifs often popping up in her richly textured illustrations.Previous to the pandemic, Sarah’s practise tended to focus on city life, reflecting where she lived. However, she has since found herself more drawn to nature, shifting to a more calm and serene state with a focus on natural forms. Sarah describes; “I like to create a dream like state within my work, that evokes a sense of calm. Something that’s a bit unfamiliar, but still rooted in reality”.
Always keen to experiment with new things, Sarah uses a range of materials within her work. Her main material is gouache, which she layers with pastels and crayons to create texture. Recently, she has been experimenting more with collage; scanning in flowers and leaves and creating drawings around them. When working on commercial projects, Sarah works digitally, combining her drawings with hand rendered elements. “As much as I’m into hand rendered outcomes, I love learning new technology and programs, so I feel up to date with the fast paced design environment,” comments the illustrator.
Currently, Sarah is working on some exciting new editorial and animation projects, and is also running a 6 week illustration course in collaboration with Elephant Academy, along with her friend Maisy Summer. She concludes; “I’m looking forward to expanding my product range more in the new year, and being more playful with print methods, ceramics and other physical products, along with more animation work”.
