Inspired by the importance of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Longyerben, Norway, Shani Mclane is a vitreography and screen printing artist who examines natural patterns and formations formed in plants. Her foray into printmaking began while studying for a BFA at University of Southern California, and an MFA at Plymouth State University. Shani later went on to become a vitreography artist at Pilchuck Glass School, as well as a printshop coordinator. She currently resides in Bridgewater, New Hampshire, where she produces limited edition serigraphic prints on paper, glass, and textile fabrics.
Shani’s work is composed of screen prints layered in order to create abstract patterns representing seeds. Her patterns are bold and use various line qualities. She also works as an educator, collaborates with artists and institutions on various projects, and is currently working on The Seed Print Collection. Through her travels as a visiting AIR to numerous locations, Shani continues to expand on her limited editions inspired by her surroundings.
“I work in a very nontraditional and unpredictable manner. I love the element of surprise. My work is comprised of layers that are printed without knowing or planning an outcome. I enjoy watching the drawings communicate with one another in a natural way without my instruction. It’s as if the drawn layers build their own relationships upon themselves”.
In 2015, Shani was selected as a visual artist to travel on an expedition from Longyearben, Norway, sailing to 78 degrees north, in order to record her findings regarding climate change and water impact. While in the region, she also researched the Global Seed Vault and the international crop diversity bank which was built in case of a man made or climate catastrophe. As a strong advocate of the STEAM initiative, she designed a curriculum, Engineering the Glass Seed, to educate students on the importance of climate change. Through the support of the Swedish American Fund Grant, Shani taught a course that worked with printmaking and glass locally, nationally, and internationally.
She is presently working on a new series titled Persevere, where she will be posting daily for the next 30 days on Instagram, showcasing a newly created print. This collection of work will be created from Shani’s home studio where she is currently in quarantine, and intends to connect and globally unite people.
