Nestled along the briny coast of Virginia is a private and micro printmaking studio that captures the bursting life of flora and fauna in relief prints. Jessica, the printmaker behind The Osprey Wing Print Studio, relies on the natural world to create unique scenes in her work. Through printmaking, Jessica combines her passions as a naturalist and an artist. Endless flocks of shorebirds, paired with the hidden depths of the sea, form the reason to create original works that she shares with those who need a moment of joy in their home.

Jessica is a self-taught artist; she started by painting (watercolour) for 6 years, and discovered the amazing world of printmaking just three years ago. The challenge of printing by hand is firmly rooted in her work; with minimal equipment, Jessica relies on hand carving tools and a glass baren to create a print. She states: “This organic and raw process utilizes critical thinking and keen mark-making while dexterity leads the way.”

Currently, Jessica’s works are large with minimal colour. However, she is planning to expand her palettes going forward in order to add a touch of softness against the rich, dark ink she uses. Jessica is also working on bringing letterpress services into her studio. To balance out her large prints, she will pair smaller forms of printmaking on a custom level. A Chandler and Price Pilot press is currently being restored and soon to be shipped to her location; “Having this antique platen press in my studio will be an amazing experience; offering letterpress to this rural + coastal area (and beyond) will be a unique driving factor to grow my business even more. I plan to do invitations of all sorts, business cards, and custom stationery on a smaller scale.”

Jessica works part-time with her printmaking business, and hopes to soon transition into full-time within the next year or two.
