Cristina Todisco is an Italian silkscreen artist living and working in Bari, South Italy, where she runs her own screen printing studio, CARTODROMO. After completing her studies, Cristina decided to live abroad, where she met some artists who, for the first time, introduced her to the world of screen printing. “In particular I was fascinated by the French silkscreen scene. It was characterised by a strong underground network of silkscreen artists, who used this technique to print their own works” says the printmaker. Upon her return to Italy, Cristina started to experiment with silkscreen printing at her studio.
“Since the beginning I was sure that I wanted to leave behind the concept of screen printing as a means of reproducing images in series” explains Cristina. All of her work demonstrates an experimental use of the technique, which she considers as a means of artistic expression. Through the process of screen printing, Cristina plays with graphic elements, colours, and shapes, combining them to create geometric images and patterns.
Her working process is not always the same; sometimes Cristina starts by drawing digitally and then set ups the work for the silkscreen, however, she states; “…what is mostly fascinating for me is the possibility to build the images directly working in silkscreen, as if they were compositions studied at the moment”. She also likes to experiment and combine silkscreen with other art techniques, including watercolour, paper collage, and spray painting.
Currently, Cristina is working on a textile silkcreen project entitled LUKLUK. The projects combines screen printed fabrics with hand sewn elements. The result is a line of unique accessories characterised by themes of colour and geometry.
Since founding CARTODROMO in 2019, Cristina has gone on to work on personal art projects as well as a printmaker for other artists who want to use silkscreen printing to bring their pieces to life. She is also active in the organisation and promotion of cultural and artistic events, exhibitions, and silkscreen courses. Cristina is the co-organiser of Ca.Co.Fest – Cartoon and Comics Festival, which takes place every year in Bari, Italy.
