DTAN (Don’t Try Anything New) Studio is a niche, independent printmaking and design studio based in Berlin. Founded by Julia Schimautz and Francis Broek, the studio is their means of combining their skills in graphic design, photography, and Riso printing. The studio is still in its early stages, thus the duo are enjoying having fun and experimenting with a variety of projects whilst figuring out their way forward.
DTAN is about creating a space for experimentation, and the printing and publication (in the form of zines, books, and art prints) of the works of some incredible people that inspire both Julia and Francis. “Ultimately we want to use graphic design to create for and expose to the digital world the unique process that is Riso printing and its potential in imperfection,” says Julia.
The pair are currently looking forward to showcasing their zines at Miss Read, their first non-virtual book fair, and the opportunity it will present for connecting with others. They recently released an amazing zine that is sticky and full of monsters; Necro Fancy, by the Austrian printmaker and illustrator Thomas Suess. Julia comments; “This zine shows exactly what we like to do, in contributing to the exposure of creatives and the experimentation in a medium we are so electrified by”.
