Fallani Venezia is an artisan screen print studio working since 1968. The Studio prints on commission and offers workshops and residencies that invite artists to learn and experiment with screen printing in the heart of Venice. The studio is currently run by Gianpaolo Fallani with the aim to preserve the archive of works made by Fiorenzo, Gianpaolo’s father, who has collaborated with more than 200 artists from all over the world and realised more than 1,000 editions.
“The relationship with artists is paramount to obtain best results. You need to win the artists trust, letting him or her understand the limits and, above all, the characteristics of the screen printing technique. To achieve best results, you need to be aware that you cannot just try to replicate the artists work and obtain a series of copies, but to create a graphic work with a specific identity, within which the artist should nevertheless always be able to recognise himself.”
After graduating in Applied Arts, Gianpaolo began working within the family company, which at the time was mainly active in photolithography; a process that turns images, photographs and slides into facilities for photo-printing. Year after year with the digital switchover the company evolved and introduced large-format digital printing and created Gruppofallani; a sector dealing with exhibition installations.
Up until 2012, Gianpaolo took charge of the production department, however he then decided to return to Venice to dedicate himself to the screen printing studio, which had previously been run by his father. “I felt bad at the idea that such a legacy of knowledge could be lost and forgotten” states Gianpaolo. The equipment and tools he uses are simple and artisanal; paper, screens, squeegees and water-based inks. Gianpaolo still operates the same printing bed which his father began to print with more than 50 years ago. The studio is not a modern tech-addicted workplace, but you will find knowledge, experience, skills, passion and sensibility.
With Fallani Venezia Gianpaolo aims to create a space that preserves heritage and provides provisions for exhibitions and a creative hub for artists, printmakers, printing enthusiasts and the curious. He concludes; “The printing studio has always been a reference point for artists passing through Venice. In the latest years it has been open to the city through organising and hosting meetings, exhibitions and concerts. We keep working so that it can become an even more friendly space“.
