Fresh Lemon Print is a letterpress studio created by designer and typographer Phil Gambrill. Phil started his career as a designer in London’s West End, working with a number of music industry clients before moving to Australia and setting up his letterpress poster art studio.
He has always had a passion for type; “the relationship between individual letters, the subtleties of different fonts and the art of arranging type to create readable, appealing designs“. However, Phil was looking for something more, and when he purchased his first press he learnt to discover a new dimension; texture. In a bygone era when letterpress used moveable type to produce printed materials, the ultimate aim was to achieve the ‘perfect print’, with no imperfections. This was superseded by the digital age when perfection was easily achieved through the word processor. Type effects can be produced through a Photoshop filter or a grungy font, but can be uniform and impersonal.
When Phil began to work with vintage wood type, he was taken by the beauty of the printed textures and impressions. Each unique print is hand inked and every time the paper is lifted from the press, he loves the excitement and thrill in seeing what will be revealed.
Phil continues to explore different type forms, overprinting inks and attempting to achieve varying texture. “Beauty is truly revealed in the print imperfections” he concludes.
