Based in the South of the Netherlands, Karakter Prints (translated from Dutch as character) are an analogue print studio specialising in letterpress, stamps and screen printing. The studio was founded by new People of Print Member Bart Heesen, who fell in love with old school printing after his son was born and he decided to have his birth announcement letterpress printed on an original Heidelberg platen. After a 12 year career in psychiatric care, Bart decided to change his path and made his first steps into the world of wood type and ink.
The studio is situated in a former soda factory. The old school presses are now running in what was the storage room. Karakter Prints is equipped with a Vandercook and FAG Proof Press, and a 1895 Chandler & Price. Bart loves to explore the possibilities of combining new techniques with old school printing methods such as 3d printing, laser cutters and collage art.
Karakter Prints offer personalised letterpress printing services for wedding invitations, posters and birth announcements to name a few. From his studio Bart also conducts workshops in letterpress, stamp and poster making. He also works as a guest teacher in primary and secondary school, and is part of visual mash up collective Tintenkillers.
